CHRISTCHURCH PILOT NOW INSTRUCTOR
* PART IN MIDDLE EAST FIGHTING (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 23. Flight Lieutenant M. H. Macfarlane, D.F.C., has returned to Britain from Egypt. He is now instructing, having completed 63 raids. He flew at Malta last December, when a formation of four Wellingtons was attacked by six Macchi fighters. Royal Air Force aeroplanes shot down two of the Macchis, but Flight Lieutenant Macfarlane’s wireless operator and front gunner died of wouncis at Malta, where his aeroplane crash-landed. During January and February Flight Lieutenant Macfarlane was stationed south of Tobruk. He bombed the Germans round El Agheila, and then returned to Malta, whore he took part in a most successful raid against Palermo, when six out of eight Axis supply ships were sunk. Fuka was his next base, where he met a New Zealand paratroop officer. Lieutenant K. Hargreaves, of Christchurch. Lieutenant Hargreaves made a flight with Lieutenant Macfarlane during a raid against Martuba. Flight Lieutenant Macfarlane returned to England by way of Africa, Brazil, the United States, and Canada.
