CHRISTCHURCH EAST SEAT

ROLL OF ELECTORS 9000 NAMES TO BE ADDED ’ At least 9000 names of electors are missing from the roll for Christchurch East, for which seat a by-election will be held in January. The electors on the roll at the 1938 general election totalled 22,059; but the main roll, compiled when a general election was imminent last year, closed with only 12,992 names. The enrolment of electors is now being carried out 'vigorously by supporters of both the Labour and National Parties, and, on Monday morning, one canvasser enrolled 70 persons residing in the electorate. The first outward sign of organising activity is that the Labour Party has established two committee rooms. The position concerning the closing of the roll for the Christchurch East by-election was explained yesterday by the Registrar of Electors (Mr A. A. Besley). He said that the roll closed at 6 p.m. on the day of the issue of the writ, no advance notice of which might be given. It was therefore advisable for electors who wished to make sure of inclusion in the supplementary roll to make early applicatipn. though it seemed likely that the writ would not be issued for some weeks. From the time of the issue of the writ till the completion of the official count of votes and notification of the election of the successful candidate 40 days wore allowed, though in most cases a lesser period was all that was required.
