SUMNER BOROUGH COUNCIL
REPORT ON NEW RESERVOIR AT SCARBOROUGH In his' report to the Sumner Borough Council last evening, the electrical, gas, and waterworks engineer (Mr A. A. Cheshire) stated that the work on the new reservoir at Scarborough had been held up recently. Five new wells had been sunk, one being connected and giving a reasonable flow, and the two small pumping stations were ready, one being in action, and the second, it was anticipated, would be operating within a few days. A total of 11,156,200 gallons of water had been used in the borough duting the last month.
Commenting on the new reservoir, the Mayor (Mr J. E. Tait) said that a fair amount of work had been completed and some pipe-line had been laid, but there had been a delay in the delivery of pumping equipment. He considered the job would be completed by the time the equipment was installed.
It was reported that the reduction of 700 cubic feet of gas manufactured a ton of coal was due to the poorer quality of the coal. During October 1,103,700 cubic feet of gas was manufactured.
Crs C. G. Burgess and J. L. Gant were appointed to attend a public conference to be held by the Canterbury Progress, League to discuss New Zealand’s manpower situation.
A letter was received from the Public Works Department granting the payment of 75 per cent, of the cost of engineering fees charged for preparing plans for air-raid shelters at Sumner.
