LYTTELTON NEWS
BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY
A year of useful activity was shown in the report presented at the annual meeting last night of the Lyttelton junior women’s branch of the British Sailors’ Society. The branch was formed soon after the outbreak of war to provide entertainment and comforts for seamen visiting Lyttelton. At the meeting last night Commander A. D. Boyle presided. The report said that members had done much knitting for merchant seamen. Many ciances had been held for the seamen at the Seamen’s Institute, and the enthusiasm and appreciation of the men were most gratifying. Short religious services on Sunday evenings were becoming increasingly popular, and members were to be congratulated on their attendance and interest not only on Sundays but on their duty nights at the various functions held for the men. The branch had had a successful year, both socially and financially. The following officers were elected:— President, Miss P. Hunter; convener, Miss D. Dale; treasurer. Mrs P. Muxlow; secretary, Miss O. Dyne.
