* CHRISTCHURCH SEASON OPENED In place of the usual opening-day ceremonies, the Christchurch rowing clubs commenced the season on Saturday with a programme of events in which members of the armed forces from all parts of New Zealand competed. The places in the different teams were balloted for and in the crews were representatives from the following clubs:—Akaroa, Queen's Drive and West End (Auckland). Ngaruawahia. Otago, Oamaru, Petone, and Auckland Rowing Club. Results : Scratch Race—First heat: G. Lindstrom (str), R. J. Hampton, G. Toner, Nankeville (bow). Won by half a length. Second heat: E. Lindstrom (str.), L. A. Hampton, Holdstein, O. H. Thyme (bow). Won by one length. Third heat; J. T. Harris (str.), W. C. McConachy, M. Stevens, K. Boswell (bow). Won by three-quarters of a length. Fourth heat: W. Richards (str.), S. McNabb, R. Lindsay, H. Warlow (bow). Won by half a length. Semifinal; G. Lindstrom beat E. Lindstrtm by a canvas; J. T. Harris beat W. Richards by half a length. • _ , , In the final J. T. Harris beat G. Lindstrom by a canvas. In the Services V. Clubs race, Army beat Avon by half a length and Air Force beat Union by half a length. The final between Army and Union was the best race of the day, and the Army crew, consisting of R. J. Hampton (str.). G. B. Johnston, E. Lindstrom. L. Davidson (bow), defeated Union by a canvas.
