PATRIOTIC FUNDS
Sir,—Mr Hayden’s reply to “Inquirer” regarding the payment of secretaries’ salaries is, I am afraid, very misleading. Most of the huts have at least two secretaries and one particular hut has no fewer than four full-time officers. All these men, I am reliably informed, receive between £4 and £6 weekly, according to their status, from the Patriotic Board’s funds. On a very conservative estimate this would involve an expenditure of approximately £IOOO yearly for salaries for this particular hut alone. It would appear that a great proportion of patriotic fund money, subscribed for the benefit of the troops in camp, in actual practice really provides a number of lucrative positions for privileged individuals. —Yours, etc., DISILLUSIONED. September 24. 1942. [This letter was referred to Mr Hayden some considerable time ago, but no reply has been received.—Ed., "The Press.”]
