VACATION WORK FOR TEACHERS
FARM OCCUPATIONS
LIST BEING COMPILED BY MANPOWER OFFICER
The Manpower Officer of the National Service Department in Christchurch is now preparing a list of male teachers and students to whom an appeal may be made to undertake vacation employment on farms. The work will cover hay-making, harvesting, linen flax harvesting, market gardening, tomato growing, fruit picking, grading, and packing. A circular letter has been sent to' headmasters of schools,’ which states that single teachers and married men without children should hold themselves in readiness to undertake certain of these types of employment if offered them. Married men with children may be placed if they give their services voluntarily. The headmasters are being asked to forward lists of male teachers on their staffs, stating family status, whether willing to accept work, or the reason for not wanting to do so, and the type of work required. Teachers able to locate seasonal work for themselves are asked to supply particulars to the Manpower Officer for approval, so as to prevent overlapping. When the letter came before the Technical College Board of Governors last evening, the principal. Dr. D. E. Hansen, said a number of his staff Lad expressed willingness to do the work, but most of them had placed their services at the disposal of the Army education scheme for the vacation.
