AMALGAMATION WITH CITY

Sir,—“Warned’s" warning to county ratepayers that his rates have been doubled through his property being included in the city is one of those assertions that, without the explanation, are calculated to mislead. It is true that unimproved properties would pay more on transfer to the city; but the great majority of properties coming in are. benefited. The residential areas of the Heathcote and Waimairi. Counties and the Borough of Riccarton would make substantial savings by coming into the city. If “Warned” is genuinely desirous of informing the public on rating.' let him place his cards on the table, give his valuations, and those interested can judge the question.—Yours, etc., M. E. LYONS. September 25, 1942.

Sir,—The letter from “Warned” must refer to Huntsbury. That letter is entirely misleading. The rates" referred to will be on an unimproved section. All the residents have been more than pleased by the reductions shown on their rate notices, especially as these include water, which previously had to be paid for. on top of rates, to' the tune of several pounds a year. We now enjoy additional services. The City Council has already given us an earnest of future benefits by greatly improving our roads, etc Yours, etc., G.A.F. September 25, 1942.
