OBJECTION BY CHURCHES

On Sunday-

MAYOR’S ASSURANCE TO DEPUTATION

The objection of the churches to the holding of an E.P.S. trial on a Sunday was expressed by a deputation of ministers which waited on the Mayor of Christchurch. Mr E. H. Andrews, who is District E.P.S. Controller, yesterday. Mr Andrews subsequently told a reporter of “The'Press’’ that he had assured the deputation that it was not the intention to hold trials regularly on Sundays: varying days and varying hours would be chosen in turn. The position was, said Mr Andrews, that Sunday, was most convenient to the greatest number of the organisation’s personnel, and Sunday would have to “take its turn’’ with other convenient days. Trials would actually have to be held, also, at much less convenient times, including business hours, because the organisation must be prepared to go into action at any time and in any circumstances. The time of the forthcoming E.P.S. trial, 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, said Mr Andrews, had been chosen to conflict as little as possible with church services. It would enable those members of the organisation who wished to do so to attend cither the early morning or the 11 a.m. church services.
