The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Supply and Munitions, said at Wellington last week that a complete hand grenade was being produced in New Zealand munitions factories every 15 s ® c OHds, Saturdays and Sundays included. Two years ago, when grenades were urgently wanted for local defence the Army authorities asked for a few hundred thousand. Production started from blueprints without a single gauge. Jig, or fixture Improvisation in many instances was necessary .to provide substitutes where specified materials were unprocurable. Operatives had to be trained to work with tools and gauges which gave them finer limits I* 1311 ™, were accustomed to work «>• . The actual filling with explosive, which was done by hand, was the longest operation. It called for a high Wgree of skill, as the efficiency of the fttnade depended on the density of the packing of the explosive.
