MAYORALTY OF TIMARU

NOMINATIONS CLOSE TO-DAY Nominations for the mayoralty of Timaru close to-day with the returning officer (Mr E. A. S. Killick). So far, two nominations for the vacancy have been received—those of the ActingMayor (Mr P. B. Foote), and Cr. A. E. S. Hanan. It is understood that Cr. Hanan has been nominated by Messrs W. S. Minehan, J. <5. Duncan, W. S. Ramsay, and W. A. Warner. The possibility of a third candidate was raised yesterday, when Cr. A. S. Kinsman announced that he had been approached by a number of electors, asking him to contest the mayoral election. So far. however, said Cr. Kinsman, he had come to no definite decision. The Timaru Borough Council has received a letter from the Municipal Association, suggesting that the council might submit the facts concerning the mayoralty for consideration by the association’s legal adviser (Mr J. O’Shea). The council has, as yet, received no legal opinion from the Municipal Association based on the facts concerning the mayoralty of Timaru. The ActingMayor has advised councillors of the offer by the Municipal Association, which will be considered at the next ordinary meeting of the council. Mr Foote stated his willingness to call a special meeting of the council to consider the matter, should any councillor so desire.
