MANPOWER SHORTAGE IN CANADA
♦ MEN AND WOMEN NEEDED IN INDUSTRY (Rec. 10 p.m.) OTTAWA, Sept. 15. Mr Elliott Little, Director of the' Canadian Selective Service System, said: “Canada faces a progressive planned pruning of workers from industries not essential to a minimum standard of living, to relieve acute manpower shortages. “The armed forces will require 200,000 men by the end of the year. An additional 100,000 are required for logging operations. “War production is suffering because Canada has not dealt sufficiently ruthlessly with the situation. Thousands are needed on defence projects, not only single young women but also those who are married, except those with considerable family responsibilities. “We are past the stage where we need in industry only those women who need money. From now on women who have never had to work because of economic necessity should come forward in the national interest.”
