OPERATIONS IN MADAGASCAR

CAPITAL PLACED ON WAR FOOTING LITTLE OPPOSITION TO BRITISH (N.Z. Press Association— Copyright.) (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 16. A suggestion that the Vichy forces in Madagascar might be nearing the end of their ability to resist is contained in a telegram which the Gov-ernor-General of Madagascar sent to Marshal Petain. The Vichy radio says the telegram stated: “Whatever may I desire to convey the island s irrevocable intention of remaining united with France.” A telegram to Marshal'Petain from the colonial administration of Madagascar described the situation as extremely grave. Laval to-day conferred with the Vichy Secretary for the Colonies. The Vichy radio added that Soutn African motorised units had occupied a height 170 miles south of Antanana-

rivo, the capital of Madagascar. Antananarivo has been placed on a war footing, with a curfew. The latest British reports indicate that the British advance in varipus areas is meeting with little opposition in spite of Vichy's mention of violent resistance. , , All the public services and French officials are working in Majunga, it is learned in London. The banks have reopened and business is normal. Deep appreciation for the courtesy of the occupying troops has been expressed by the local French authorities.
