THEFT AT CAMP
TWO MEN CONVICTED (P.A.) BLENHEIM, September 16. John Alexander Finlay, aged 19, a soldier, pleaded guilty before Mr T. E. Maunsell. S.M.. to three charges involving the theft of canteen and patriotic funds totalling, £66 10s. He was sentenced to three years’ reformative detention. Frederick Alexander Billens, aged 30, charged with aiding and abetting Finlay, received an identical sentence. TTie police said that last Monday funds belonging to the Field Ambulance, the National Patriotic Fund Board, and the Post and Telegraph Department were taken from a Y.M.C.A. canteen at a camp. Finlay had admitted the thefts and £SB had been recovered. Billens was employed in the canteen and possessed keys. He showed Finlay where the cash was kept and then arranged to leave the doors open for him. Both the accused had lists of previous convictions and had been in Borstal institutions.
