TROTTING NOTES

The Wellington Stakes Captain Morant, the champion two-year-old of last year and winner of the Oamaru and New Zealand Sapling Stakes, is likely to be elected a warm favourite for the Wellington Stakes on Saturday, and on the form shown by horses of his age he appears to have a good deal in his favour. In his first race, the Timaru Nurserv Stakes, he was beaten by Tam o' Shahter and Gold Sheik, but he has Improved a good deal since then. Tam o’ Shanter, winner of the Timaru Nursery Stakes, has not raced since, and he may be short of the experience possessed by Captain Morant. His running at Timaru showed him to be a colt well above the average. Golden Shadow has shown promise, and he may be one to fill a place. He\is by Red Shadow from Great Murlcata. Lucky Gem. in R. B. Berry’s stable, is a chestnut gelding by Lucky Jack from Sea Pearl, and there Is no better-bred horse in the race. He is a good, strong type of pacer, and may handle the going better than the majority. Others engaged include Trusty Scott, a black gelding by U. Scott—Trusty Maid; Struell, a bay gelding by Lusty Volo —Rongonui; Wee Logan, bay gelding by Logan FraserEdith Locanda; Carnival Queen, bay filly by Don Direct—Matchable; Pocketbook. bay filly by Gold Paper—Nancy Bingen; and Atawhero ch c by Red Shadow— Zella, A Prospect , , Azim showed on the big track at Ashburton that he was quite at home on the going he will probably race on at Trentham on Saturday. Azim has shown a big improvement, and gives every promise of rising high above his present company. He is engaged in two events on Saturday, and is nicely placed in both races. Becoming Solid Highrate’s running at Trentham on Saturday showed him to have developed a solidity for which he was not always noted, and he may again have to be considered in immediate engagements. A Smart Pacer Blaydon, who has failed to rise to the highest classes simply because of recurring unsoundness, is well favoured by a grass track, although he raced particularly well last month at Addington. If the - going is yielding at Trentham this week, Blaydon may beat the majority in the Sir Thomas Wilford Memorial. In this race he will meet a smart field, including Ronald Logan, 24 yards. Indian Clipper, 24 yards, and Shadow Maid, scr. One with a prospect is Indian Clipper, who won so well at the patriotic meeting held at Addington. He is a good stayer and an Improved pacer. Pacing Power Pacing Power was allowed to forfeit his engagement in the Sir Thomas Wilford Memorial on Saturday, but he is still engaged in the Wellington Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, in which he is nicely placed on the limit. Pacing Power is a high-grade sprinter, as he showed in the final event at Addington last month. It is a useful field, but Pacing Power is capable of doing better than the 2min 48sec he is handicapped on. Disappointing Our Jewel, previously raced in Auckland. has made several appearances on Canterbury courses, but he has not lived up to the big reputation he enjoys. He may have improved a good deal, and whether this is the case or not will be shown at Trentham on Saturday, when he will meet some very smart pacers.
