FOUNDERS’ DAY

ENJOYABLE DINNER PARTY Yesterday, the birthday of the late Mr A. McLean, founder of the McLean Institute, was celebrated by the ladies of “Holly Lea” and “Quamby,” both of which are administered by the institute. In the evening the special celebration of the day, the annual dinner party, specifically provided for by Mr McLean and generally held at “Holly Lea,’’ had a change of venue, but retained all its outstanding characteristics. It was held at Death’s, and the decoratiohs, always a feature of these parties, were most effective, cinerarias, rare azaleas, and blossom, all sent from “Holly Lea,” being arranged in the dining' room. Numerous toasts were honoured, and Mr H. D. Acland gave a brief outline of the life of Mr McLean, emphasising the fact that nil the ladies at Holly Lea and Quamby were beneficiaries under his will. After dinner, the guests gathered in the lounge, where songs were sung by Mr J. H. Cocks and Miss Meriyn Todd, for whom Mrs Cocks was accompanist, and some old-time dances were .enjoyed. Incidental music was played by Misses V. Wilson (piano), M. Chapman (’ceJo), and R. Griffiths (violin). Members of the board of directors and other specially-invited guests present were the Mayor. Mr E. H. Andrews, arid the Mayoress, Miss E. Couzins. Bishop Brodie, the Rev. J. Lawson Robinson and Mrs Robinson, the Rev. Raymond Dudley and Mrs Dudley, Mr and Mrs James Maling, Mr H. D. Acland and hr daughter, Mrs James Macfarlane, Mr and Mrs H. A. Young, Mr and Mrs A. E. Flower, Mrs J. Cracrott Wih on and her daughter, Mrs D. P. Dickinson, Mrs W. S. Bean and her daughter, Mrs Douglas Macfarlane. Mr and Mrs E. C. Levvey, Dr. J. F. and Mrs Duncan, Mr and Mrs K. Jameson, Mrs E. Paton, Miss A, M. Todd. Miss A. M. Armour, Miss M. Westbrook, Miss S. Kitto, and Miss C. I. Cruden.
