PATROL VESSEL LOST

(Rec. 5 p.m.) OTTAWA, Sept. 14. The Canadian naval authorities announce the loss while guarding a convdy of the Canadian patrol vessel Racoon, witth 38 officers and men. The Canadian Minister for the Navy (Mr Angus Macdonald) said there had been an increase in the tempo of enemy activity on the Canadian side of the Atlantic. Four merchantmen had also been lost through enemy action, with 10 of their officers and crew, the remainder of the personnel being rescued. The Racoon was with a convoy which was attacked by one or more submarines in a fog. The Racoon signalled, and later explosions were heard, but the escort ships did not find any trace. A Canadian Air Force aeroplane sighted an empty lifeboat and two floats. ___
