TRINITY COLLEGE OF MUSIC
CONCERT AND PRESENTATION OF MEDALSf The Christchurch (N.Z.) Centre for local examinations of Trinity College of Music. London, held a concert in the Canterbury University College Hall on Monday evening, when successful candidates for honours were presented with their medals by the examiner, Mr Anderson Tyrer. Mr Tyrer and Mr Henri Penn, assistant examiner, were welcomed by Dr. T. Vernon Griffiths, Professor of Music at the University College, who presided over a large attendance. Awards of medals were made to Miss Patricia S. Bateman (senior honours), Miss Helen M. Bateman (intermediate honours), and John Dodds (junior honours). Students of music throughout the Empire owed a great debt of gratitude to Trinity College, said Dr. Griffiths. The examinations conducted by the college provided them with an incentive to work, while the arrangement •of its syllabus assured them a thorough training. 1 *'| The impOi. i.ance of music in education was emphasised by Mr Tyrer in his address. In some schools music was counted as an extra subject, but the time had come for an important readjustment. Music offered more scope for the play of imagination and feeling than did many other subjects, and for that reason it should take a high place in the school curriculum. Referring to recent examinations, Mr Tyrer said that the standard had declined perhaps slightly since two years ago, but that could reasonably be put down to the prevalence of illness lately. A programme was contributed by the followings:—Miss H. M. Bateman (piano), John Dodds (violin), Miss P. S. Bateman (piano), Bernard Slade (violin), Miss E. Hooper (piano), Maurice Till (piano), and Gordon A. English (violin).
