ARMED FORCES APPEALS

♦ DECISIONS OF BOARD Appeals heard by the Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday included 19 by Woolston Tanneries, Ltd. Of this number 10 were described as tannery employees, two labourers, two sole-leather hands, one drum hand, two machine operators, one machinist, and one leather grader. Sine die adjournments were granted in the following appeals:—Kennedy E. Jones, Reginald V. Cook, Walter M. C. Darrell, Andrew R. Dryhberg, Roy F. Kerr, Herbert A. Roberts, William H. Rowe, Frank W. Winter, Richard J. Swanston, Gordon B. Silcock, Clarence Jordan, Gilbert E. Hardaker, Ronald A. Jorgensen, Harry F. Wootton, Frank Robb, Eric S. Thompson, Clarrie James, Simeon Francis Barkle, Ernest F. Moore, and Percy T. Lewis, reservists all to do service in the Home Guard. “Petrol restrictions have Imposed a heavier responsibility on the Tramways staff and the transport of the Home Guard is an added difficulty," said Mr H. E. Jarman in supporting an appeal by the Christchurch Tramways Board for Alex. Sydney Schulz, motorman, John Macer, bus driver, A. D. Barron, overhead linesman, Richard Chamberlain, motor mechanic, and Noel Ernest Clemens, clerk. In each appeal a sine die adjournment was granted. "The board is trying to meet the position by training and employing women,” continued Mr Jarman, "but there are many Jobs that cannot be carried out efficiently by women. Women conductors are being trained, but it will be some time before they become really useful.” In answer to a question as to whether it was proposed to employ women drivers, Mr Jarman said he thought the public generally would feel safer if men were in charge of the cars. Mr J. S. Barnett presided and with him were Mr G. T. Thurston and Mr H. H. McCaw. Mr E. D. Thompson represented the Crown, and Captain S. Bowron the military authorities. Other appeals were dealt with as follows:—Hugh Wallace Thompson, trust officer (N.Z. Insurance Company, Ltd.), dismissed, reservist not to commence training before November 30; R. W. Macdonald and Company, Ltd.), dismissed, reservist not to commence training before January 1; Charles Ernest Saunders, fertiliser hand (Canterbury Bye-Products Company, Ltd.), adjourned sine die; Claude M. H. Fletcher, shipping clerk (Kinsey and Company, Ltd.), adjourned sine die; Stuart William Spence, depot superintendent, Bertie Stanley Jeffery, pump fitter and oil storeman (Associated Motorists Petrol Company, Ltd.), adjourned sine die; Richard Hugh Sneddon. grain grader (Claude Ferrier and Company), adjourned .sine die; Reginald John Herman, motor-driver, dismissed; reservist not to commence training before January 1; Douglas McLean Meikle and Arthur Ernest Hawkins, canister workers (J. Gadsden and Company, Ltd.), decision reserved; Sholto Wallace Macfarlane, student, appeal against service dismissed, appeal against overseas service adjourned sine die; Raymond Royal Ware, lorrydriver (W. W. Keighley and Company, Ltd.), dismissed, reservist not to commence training before November 30; Walter A. H.
