BOWLS

♦ CHRISTCHURCH CENTRE Because the rationing of petrol made it difficult for outlying clubs to compete in the pennant competition, the match committee of the Christchurch Bowling Centre suggested in a report at a meeting last evening that the competition should be abandoned for the next season. •Entries for all day tournaments close on Monday, October 5. and delegates will have an opportunity of attending a meeting of the centre on October 12. Mr T. D. Lennie presided, and asked for comments on the match committee’s suggestion. Mr A. Besley said the Sydenham Club, with other clubs at the south end of the city, was taking steps to arrange games. Mr A. Clark said Barrington was in this scheme, which embraced six clubs, and probably they would make their own arrangements. Mr C. Spearman said the R.S.A. Club thought the centre should run a competition, with a restricted number of teams, 7 say four, from any club. Mr W. Fuller said the Imperial Club was prepared to find four teams each Saturday for inter-club games. Mr T. G. Fox said he thought the centre should leave clubs to make their own arrangements for the season. Mr D. Dickson supported this, as the view of Linwood. Mr A. F. Rollinson, for Opawa, said he thought the R.S A. suggestion would get a short shrift from the big clubs. The chairman, speaking for Elmwood, was opposed to any form of competition being arranged by the centre this season. Mr R. E. McNish said that in view of the success of the percentage fours last season, the Canterbury Club Was likely to occupy its Saturdays again this season in the same way. Mr H. Taylor said the feeling at Beckenham was in favour of holding a competition. with zoning of clubs. Pairs Games Mr R. E. McNish moved, in terms of notice, that the centre champion of champion pairs should be played next season with three bowls for each player. He said the change had the strong support of the Canterbury Club. He urged that it would minimise driving, improve drawing, and generally provide better play. Mr J. D. Renton seconded the motion which, he said, was greatly favoured by the St. Albans Club. A number of delegates spoke, but the motion was lost. Colts’ Championship On the motion of Mr C. Spearman. R.S.A., the match committee will report on a proposal to institute a champion of champions singles competition for colts. A letter from the Catholic Bowling Club stated that the club’s green would not be available in the coming season, as the ground was required for educational purposes. Arrangements had been made for playing as members of the R.S.A. Club for the season, but the club wished to retain its Identity and its affiliation with the centre, pending the time when it would again have its own green. This arrangement was agreed to. The first Wednesday in December was fixed as the date for the Steans Cup match.
