LAWN TENNIS
COMPETITION PROGRAMME RECOMMENDED EFFECT OF SHORTAGE OF BALLS Determination to carry on with competitions in the coming season was expressed by members of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s competitions committee last evening, when it was decided to recommend the annual meeting of the association to hold mixed competitions and competitions for men and women separately. It was stated that the association's stock of bails would be sufficient. by strict rationing, to supply a limited programme of competitions. The expectation that men and women in the services would be keen to take part in the competitions was expressed, and the secretary was instructed to approach the sports, officers of the various units. After the chairman (Mr W. A. Clothier) had expressed the opinion that the competitive side of the game should be kept going as long as possible, Mr J. Mercer said the suggestion had been made that the association’s supply of balls should be distributed among clubs. Some persons seemed to have an idea that the association had large stocks of balls. This was not the case and the clubs would benefit very little from such a scheme. Many of the clubs had supplies of balls and players were still able to obtain a limited number. He thought there was enough to last the season, although players would have to be far more frugal in the use of balls. It was decided to advise the clubs that the committee had under consideration the reduction of entry fees.
