CURRENT NOTES
Miss Betty Halliday, who has beeri spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs A. Halliday (Hororata), returned south yesterday. Miss Fay Hammond (Fendalton) and Miss Joqn Hayhurst are staying at “The Lodge,” Hanmer Springs. Mr and Mrs J. E. Strachan (Rangiora) have returned from a short visit to the Misses L. and B. Strachan, Dyer’s Pass road, Cashmere. Mr and Mrs Harold Lightband (West Avon Flats) are spending a holiday at Hanmer Springs. The annual friendly hockey match between the Hornby and Carlton women’s senior teams for the Pearce Cup was played at Hornby on Saturday, resulting in a win for the Carlton team by 5 goals to 3. Goals were scored for Carlton by C. Aldridge (3) M. Richards, and P. Brockman, and for Hornby by G. McKenzie (2), and M. McKenzie. After the game the visiting team was entertained at afternoon tea, and the cup was handed to the members of the winning team by Miss M McKenzie. Messrs, E. Pearce and W Bowden were umpires. The monthly meeting of the Fendalton Garden Club took the form of a “bring and buy” afternoon at the home of Mrs J. L. Kerr, Brown’s road, St. Albans, on Monday, Ferns and native shrubs were the subject of a talk by Mr S. A. La Roche. A motion of sympathy with Mrs David Crozier and Mrs Clive Crozier in their recent bereavement wa passed. On the motion of Mrs A. R, Blank a vote of thanks was passed to the speaker and the hostesses. Members of the Ashburton Cavendish Club were entertained by the Ashburton Musical Club on Saturday evening. The following contributed items;— Piano solos, Misses Olive Beck, Betty Tucker, Marie Kelly, Margaret Jennings, and Mrs S. H. Curd; piano duet Misses L. Lewis and J. Salkeld; songs. Misses Betty Millichamp, Mary Bruce, May Allen. Mesdames C. O’Keefe and A. T. Smith; vocal duets. Mrs Smith, Miss Allen, Mesdames W. Thomas and H. D. Gunn; violin solo Mrs H. J. Chapman. The accompanists were Misses Jennings, Lewis, Mrs Curd, and Mr T Staples. To-morrow (Wednesday) the Christjhurch Plunket Society makes its annual street appeal for funds. Stalls will be found in Victoria square for the sale of delicious cakes, cooked food, produce, books, plants, and flowers.
