PRICE OF FISH
' Sir,—Regarding the fixing of ceiling prices for fish, mentioned by the Minister of Supply in Wednesday’s issue, I wish to point out that by limiting the auction prices the retailer will as usual be left alone. The producer will be fighting a southerly, gale on land and sea. If on the other hand a ceiling price was fixed for the retailer, auction prices would be automatically controlled. The Auckland idea of a minimum price would encourage the fishermen to catch more variety. As things are, with petrol at 3s a gallon (rebate granted), commission 10 per cent. freezer charges 7J per cent., railage 2s fid a case, and social security 2s fid in the £, the producer gets about 50 per cent. <of wholesale market price. With petrol licences limited, is it any wonder that the fishermen are forced to go for the best priced catches rind have to be fairly confident of the weather before they burn a gallon of petrol.—Yours, etc., WELL FIXED.
