OBITUARY
MR FRANCIS MANDER The death has occurred in his ninetyfourth year of Mr Francis Mander,'of Remuera, who for 20 years was a member of Parliament and later of the Legislative Council. Mr Mander’s parents came to New Zealand in 1847 .in the sailing ship ; Ramillies and settled at Onehunga, where Mr Mander was born. In his early twenties Mr Mander began his long association with the timber Indus- , try in the bush on the Hunua Ranges, and later built his first timber mill at Awhitu. on the Manukau Harbour. In 1902, Mr Mander contested the Marsden seat for the Reform Party against ths sitting member, Mr R. Thompson. Mr Mander won the contest and held the seat until his resignation at the end of 1922. Six months later he was appointed to the Legislative Council, of which he was a member for seven years. Mr Mander had a family of one son and four daughters. One is Miss Jane Mander, the New Zealand novelist. MR G. GREENSTREET Mr George Greenstreet, who was well known in Gisborne for many years, died in the Cook Hospital recently. He was born in Christchurch 57 years ago, but spent most of his life in Gisborne. He was twice married, and is survived by his wife and one son, one daughter, one step-daugh-ter and four grandchildren.
