MACKENZIE COUNTY COUNCIL
SITE FOR HEALTH CAMP SUGGESTED Because of the continued , good weather little road work had been done during the month, the engineer (Mr D. Jeune) reported to a meeting of the Mackenzie County Council. 1 As a result of the assistance given by one of the local Home Guard units little damage had been done by a fire which had spread to one of the council's plantations. Referring to the proposed health camp at Tekapo, the chairman (Mr V. V. Kirke) said that one of the main difficulties would now be transport. The engineer said that in early days a site had been purchased and planted for a sanatorium near Winscombe Station. He suggested that the site might be suitable for a health camp, and its proximity to the rail would solve the transport problems. It was suggested that fire-breaks should be made round plantations td safeguard them. The engineer was asked to attend to the matter. Because of the dry season it was agreed to postpone until the autumn the planting of trees in the Tekapo riding. The credit balance was reported to be £2680 7s. In reply to an inquiry made by the Fairlie branch of the Farmers’ Union for a supply of phosphorus for poisoning grain, Mr Jeune said that it was impossible to procure phosphorus for poisoning birds. It was suggested that the engineer should make inquiries about the release from home defence of men required for special work, and that application should then be made for the men. This was agreed to. While the tractor was not in use, it was agreed that it should be available for hire, due allowance being made for keeping the machine in proper repair.
