SALE OF VEGETABLES AT "CEILING" PRICES
DISSATISFACTION REPORTED IN AUCKLAND MARKETS
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 17. Conditions described as unsatisfactory existed at city markets to-day when business was conducted under new “ceiling” prices for certain vegetables. With intense competition for lower-priced produce, merchants found it impossible to allocate the goods fairly, while much extra labour was entailed in selling by weight instead of by bag. One effect was to bring to the market many small buyers who were previously unable to pay the dearer prices. The result was much clamouring for goods even ' higher prices.
