PROTEST TO HOSPITAL BOARD
. ♦ ACCOMMODATION AT KAIKOURA DELAYS IN BUILDING PROGRAMME (0.R.) KAIKOURA, August 8. “Although *Kaikoura is the biggest district in the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s country area, the hospital buildings are undoubtedly the worst,” stated Mr F. J. Monk (chairman) at the monthly meeting of the Kaikoura County Council, when drawing the attention of councillors to the accommodation at the Kaikoura Hospital. The new nurses’ home had been constructed after two years, but the proposed new maternity block, which was an urgent necessity, had been placed well down the list. Over the whole year the average number of patients had been 26.5. “Some of the board members,” stated Mr Monk,' “had the erroneous idea that Kaikoura would go back when the railway was completed.” It was his opinion that they would have to provide for 1000 more people than at present. "The accommodatioi in the men’s ward is exactly the same as it was 28 years ago and it is really bad. while the position in the women’s ward is far from satisfactory,” said Mr Monk. It was decided to bring the position before the North Canterbury Hospital Board, the Minister of Health, and the member for the district.
