LEAVE FOR DEFAULTERS
Sir, —I have recently met a man in Christchurch whom I know was committed to the detention camp at Rotorua after having his appeal dismissed before the Armed Forces Appeal Board, This man informs me that he has been granted 10 days’ leave to come to Christchurch in order that he might contract marriage. In contrast to this, I understand that no such leave is granted to the boys in the fighting services, w.io have undertaken to protect C.O.’s and the rest of us. It is most difficult to understand the attitude of the authorities,—Yours, pfp AGRICOLA. July 6, 1942. [Commenting on this letter, the Minister of Justice (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) said: “There were special circumstances which made it proper to grant leave. As these are of private concern, they cannot be published. The time granted was the least required by the present travelling facilities.”]
