APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE
—♦ — MANPOWER COMMITTEE’S DECISIONS Several appeals on behalf of men engaged on essential work were allowed at yesterday’s sitting of the Christchurch Manpower Committee. Messrs J. S. Barnett (chairman), S. L. Wright, and G. T. Thurston heard the appeals. Mr E. D. Thompson (secretary) appeared for the Crown, and Captain S. Bowron for the military authorities. The following decisions were given, the name of the appellant being given in brackets exdept where the reservist appealed on his own behalf: W. S, Handisides, who appealed against territorial service on the grounds of undue hardship, said he had completed the first year of his engineering course in three years, during which he had been working. Now he was a full-time student. He was withdrawing an appeal on the grounds of conscientious objection, and had applied for service in the Air Force. The appeal was dismissed on the understanding that the decision should not prejudice his application for the Air Force. The appeal of J. I. Farr for the withdrawal from the territorials of J. H. B. Farr, who had earlier been given harvest leave till March 31. was not granted, but the period of leave was extended to May 31. An application by S. H, Lawson for the services of J. K. Sanders for the harvesting of onions, was dismissed. It was stated that Sanders had been employed only casually before, and Captain Bowron said ( the Army was anxious to retain Sanders, who was being given special training. Adjourned sine die: T. F. Ashley, sausage casings hand (Canterbury Frozen Meat Co., Ltd.), to July 31; W. J. Stuart and D. N. Davis, slaughterhouse hands (New Zealand Refrigerating Company), to May 31: F. H. McDowell, baler (Bowmans, Ltd.), to March 31; C. S, Taylor, driver (Bowmans, Ltd.), to April 10; T. R. E. Witte, foreman joiner (H. C. Simpson), to June 1, on understanding that if reservist is free from his present work before that lime the Manpower Committee must be notified; H. H. Cuttance, labourer (C. S. Luney, Ltd.), to May 25; S. J. Barnett, farm hand (L Harris), to May 31; R. D. Falioon, joiner (J. L. Gant), to May 31; D. C. R. Cameron, tractor-driver (R. L Jameson), to May 31; E, T. Moore, farm hand (H. S. Moore), to June 1; E. C. Leach, slaughterman (North Canterbury Freezing Company), to May 31. J. C. J. Humphrey, farm hand (J. W. Graham), to commence training on April I, and to be released indefinitely from military service on July 31; C O. Kempthorne, farmer, to do his training from June 1 to August 31. G. T. Matter, carpenter (J. Calder). case to be referred to Public Works Department.
