ADVICE FOR EMERGENCY

FIRST-AID DEMONSTRATION

The necessity of being ready to meet enemy air-raids without becoming panic-stricken was emphasised by Mr J. Wyn Irwin, district warden, Christchurch West, at a well-attended meeting in the Christchurch West High School last night, when methods of first-aid to the injured were demonstrated. After giving information as to the means to adopt to be ready for airraids, Mr Wyn Irwin introduced the wardens and fire patrol leaders of the district, and referred to the need lor co-ordination. In case of evacuation he advised having ready a packed box of emergency rations, and a valise full of clothing, and that furniture should be labelled, so as to indicate where it was to go. The main feature of the meeting was the demonstration of first aid. which was carried out by women from business firms and private homes in the district, under the direction of Mr H. G. Ablett, of the St. John Ambulance, who spoke of the distinction between first-aid and the subsequent treatment by doctors or trained nurses. A demonstration was also given on artificial respiration by women members of the Royal Life Saving Society.
