TEMUKA SEAT

ELECTION CONTEST IMMINENT INDEPENDENT ANNOUNCES CANDIDATURE A by-election for the Temuka seat in Parliament is imminent, Mr D. <-• Davie having announced to xne Press" last evening that he will be an independent candidate. The only other candidate so far announced is Mr Jack who will stand for the National Party. , , . "I consider that monetary reform is essential to meet after-war peace conditions." said Mr Davie, explaining his decision to contest the election. I have been, a monetary-reform campaigner for a number of years.”

Mr Davie, who is 50 years of age, was born in Christchurch and was educated at Christ’s College. After leaving school he was farming for some years, but latterly he has devoted most of his time to lecturing on social credit and monetary reform. He was the official Labour candidate at the 1935 election for the Hurunui seat, held by the then Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes), the third candidate being Mr O. Duff. Labour was returned as the Government and Mr Davie resigned from the party as a protest against its taxation policy. Some organising for the election campaign has been done already in the Temuka electorate, said Mr Davie last night, and he intended visiting the district again on Monday to prepare for the opening of the campaign later in the week.
