“WE MUST BE PREPARED”

MAYOR’S ADVICE DIGGING OF TRENCHES IN THE CITY “I am glad to hear that the digging of trenches has put the wind up people in the city,” said the Mayor of Christchurch. Mr E. H. Andrews, at a public meeting last evening, when a man in the audience suggested that the digging of trenches about city parks and reserves had frightened people. “It was not until we started to dig the trenches that the people seemed to realise that there was a possibility of us being bombed,” Mr Andrews said. “Generally, the population did not seem to feel that we were in the danger zone. When the trenches were started, the people felt that it was war and that war might come to us. I sincerely hope that we will never have to use the trenches, but if it did come, and we had not dug the trenches, we would be blamed. Perhaps even if nothing happens, we will still be blamed, for having dug them. But we would rather take the blame that way than the other. People say it cannot happen here. Well, it might not. But whether it does or not, we must be prepared.’’
