VICEREGAL GREYMOUTH, January 15. Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral (Sir Cyril Newall) and Lady Newall, accompanied by Captain C. J. Holland-Martin, A.D.C.. who are on their first visit to the West Coast, this morning inspected the Strongman State Colliery and this afternoon paid a visit to the Grey Hospital. His Excellency also laid the foundation stone of the Centennial Memorial Plunket and Rest Rooms, and later visited the harbour. Lady Newall visited the rooms of the Red Cross Society, the Patriotic Association, and the Lady Galway Guild. This evening his Excellcncv was the guest of the Greymouth'Club, while Lady Newall met representatives of women’s organisations engaged in war work. Their Excellencies will leave to-morrow morning for Hokitika, where they will be tendered a civic reception to-morrow evening. They will visit several golddredging plants and the Westland Hospital, and his Excellency will inspect a mass parade of Home Guardsmen, returned soldiers, and Emergency Precaution Services personnel in Cass square in the evening. Mr V. E. Hampson-Tindale, Lower Hutt, has been appointed organiser of the fire-watching service in Wellington. Acting-Commander T. S. Critchley, R.N.Z.N., has assumed duty as Naval Officer in Charge. Fiji, He was formerly director of naval recruiting, Dcvonport naval base, and was living in New Zealand in retirement from the Navy at the .utbreak of war. Commander P. R. Dearden, R.N., has relinquished the duties of Resident Naval Officer, Suva, Canon J. H. Sykes, of Greytown, will retire shortly after 49 years’ service. Mr David Allan has been, appointed a member of the Meat Producers’ Board, representing stock and station agents, according to a Gazette notice. — P.A. Lieutenant John Carmalt Jones, R.N., son of Dr. Carmalt Jones, of Dunedin, has received accelerated promotion to the rank of commander. He entered the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in 1925 as a New Zealand cadet, and served in H.M.S. Diomede on the New Zealand station and at Aden in 1935. He has been employed for some years in the Naval Ordnance Department.
