APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE

SITTING OF MANPOWER COMMITTEE Appeals against service for home defence were considered yesterday by the Christchurch Manpower Committee m an ail-day sitting. Mr J. S. Barnett presided. and with him were Messrs H. H. McCaw and S. L. Wright. Mr E. D. Thompson represented the Crown, and Captain S. Bowron the military authorities. Decisions were as follows: F. Alsop, header-harvester driver, and B. C. Hill, header-harvester driver, appeal by G. W. Bailey, employer—lt was stated that Bailey had two header harvesters, a chair-cutting plant, and baling plant. Alsop was called for service in the Territorial Forces and Hill had been called up for the National Military Reserve.—Alsop’s territorial training was postponed until March 15 and Hill will be released from the reserve from February 1 to March 15, L. Cooke, grocer, appeal by Supply Stores, Ltd.—Dismissed. Ivan William D. Henderson, plumber, appeal by Director of National Service. — Dismissed. Frederick Josiah Ashby, shingle-plt operator, appeal by Ashby Bros., Ltd.— The appellant firm stated that reservist was in the National Military Reserve and was wanted for essential work in the shingle plant, particularly for repairs.— Dismissed. Martin Alexander Thompson, boot operative, appeal by M. O'Brien and Company, Ltd,—lt was stated that Thompson, who had enlisted In the National Military Reserve, was engaged on military boot contracts, and doing important work. Postponement of service was asked for and this was agreed on, for six weeks. O. L. Shaw, grocer’s assistant, appeal on behalf of Mrs Shaw, mother,—lt was stated that the reservist had been caring for his mother, who was an Invalid. Two brothers were serving overseas. Reservist himself would far sooner serve, but there was no one to help the mother.—‘Held over for inquiries. Mervyn Jenkins, farm hand, appeal by M. E. Jenkins, father.—lt was asked that training of the reservist be deferred until March 25. This was agreed on, Eric Fine, carpenter's apprentice, appeal by W. K. Calder, employer.—Postponement for nine months was asked for, to enable reservist to complete his apprenticeship.—Dismissed. T. H, Sheridan, shearer—Reservist asked for postponement of service until February 3. He was a trooper in the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. This was agreed on, Harold George Feather, farm hand, appeal by Mrs E. Burns, employer.—Postponement was asked for.—Training postponed to March 1. E. A. Frame, air-gun sprayer, appeal by Ainger Air-Spray, Ltd.—The reservist it was stated, was employed on an urgent defence contract.—Training postponed to February 14. A. W. Wilson, drover, appeal by the North Canterbury Sheepfarmers' Freezing Company.—Postponement until the end of the season was asked for and granted until April 15. W. B. Cochrane, casing factory operative, appeal by the Independent Casing Company.—Training postponed, position to be reviewed on March 15. Gordon Nelson, tractor driver, appeal by R. Anderson, employer.—Suspension of training for four months was sought.— Training postponed to March 31. R. W. Sutherland, shop assistant, appeal by C. C. A. Barnard, employer.—Two weeks’ leave from camp granted. Trevor Thomas McMillan, blacksmith, appeal by W. A. Donald, employer. Postponement was asked for until the end of the harvest.—Training postponed to March 1. James Brooker, cook, appeal by G. S. Peryman, threshing contractor.—Dismissed. C. J.
