VICEREGAL CHRISTCHURCH, January 13. Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Newall, attended by Captain C. J. Holland-Martin, left Christchurch this morning to pay their first official visits 'o Westport, Greymouth, and Hokitika. Mr Basil D. Dahl, a member of the United States consular staff in Wellington, has been appointed Consul for the United States in Wellington. Before commencing business at the monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College yesterday, Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., said that since their last meeting the death had occurred of a former member of the board, Mr W. A. Banks, who had served the institution over a long period of years. Mr Kyle moved a vote of condolence with his family. The chairman (Mr W. O. Rennie) said that long before Mr Banks was identified with the college he had been schoolmaster at Lincoln, and from then on till he recently resigned from the board he had always taken a keen interest in agricultural education. Mr W. Grieve has been appointed to 'the position of staff officer, G.S.O. 111. of Area 12, at Invercargill, with the rank of captain. Because of his military duties it will be necessary for Mr Grieve to relinquish the positions of chairman of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council and chairman of the Invercargill Metropolitan Patriotic Committee. Mr W. R. Carey returned to Christchurch by the steamer express from Wellington yesterday morning. Captain D. F. Coleman, who has been mentioned in dispatches, is the son of Mrs C. R. Coleman, Broomfield, Amberley. Captain A. Macintosh, Wellington, marine superintendent of the Shaw Savill and Albion shipping line, arrived at Lyttelton by the steamer express yesterday. Lieutenant E. G. Somerset, son of Mrs G. C. B. Somerset, St. James avenue, Papanui, who was seriously injured by a bomb blast while stationed with the garrison at Tobruk, has been discharged from hospital and is in a naval officers' convalescent home in the Middle East. He hopes to rejoin his ship shortly. The resignation of Mr P. J. Byrne as honorary secretary of the Canterbury Cricket Association, was accepted with regret at the meeting of the association’s management committee last evening. Mr Byrne has held the office for about six years, and has resigned because of business demands. Tributes to his services were paid by members of the committee, and expressions of regret at his resignation and appreciation of his work will be recorded in the minutes.
