DEFENCES TO BE STRENGTHENED
EXPANSION PLANNED BY SWEDEN (Received January 13, .11.40 p.m.) LONDON, January 13. A Stockholm message reports that a five-year plan for the development of Sweden’s defences was announced at the opening of the Riksdag. Swedish manpower is already fully utilised, and the plan includes improvements in organisation and equipment with the object of increasing mobility and striking power. It includes larger tanks, heavier artillery, enlarged anti-dank formations, and more automatic firearms. Naval development relates particularly to reinforcement of the torpedo as a weapon, involving the construction of submarines, destroyers, and torpedo-boats. , The air force is to be extended from 11 to 16 wings. The total defence expenditure will be, £110,000,000.
