RURAL MAIL DELIVERY

——« CURTAILMENT OF MANY SERVICES PETROL ECONOMY MEASURE Rural mail deliveries In the Christchurch Chief Post Office area have been substantially curtailed as a petrol economy measure. A number of deliveries have been reduced from daily to three days a week, and in other cases have been reduced by one delivery a week. A few services which carry cream are to continue on a daily basis. The following summary of the position has been furnished by the Chief Postmaster, Mr V. C. Lawn:— Reduced to three times a week:— Amberley-Leithfield, Amberley-Mount Brown, Annat-Russell’s Flat, CheviotSpotswood. Cheviot-Gore Bay, Christ-church-Lake Coleridge. RangioraSpringbank, Coalgate-Hororata, Dar-field-Waddington, Kaiapoi-Ohoka, Leeston-Broolcside, Oxford-Glentui, Oxford-Rockford. Rakaia-Dorie. Ra-kaia-Mount Hutt. Rakaia-Te Pirita. Rangiora-North Loburn, RangioraWaikuku Beach, Rotherham-Waiau river (Edwards’ gate). Waipara-Scar-gill-Waikarl. Five days a week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays) Ashburton-Alford Forest, Ash. burtcn-Eiffelton. Ashburton-Mayfieltl. Five days a week (Mondays to Fridays, inclusive):—Christchurch-Yaid-hurst-Greendale, Christchurch-Spring-slon, Darfleld-Glentunnel-Coalgate-Whitecliffs, Christchurch-Doyleston-Leeston and Southbridge (Days Motors’ service). Daily services:—The following daily services which are combined with the carriage of passengers or the collection of cream, have not been reduced: Ashburton-Melhven, Ashburton-New-land, Hawarden-Mason's Flat, Hawar-den-The Peaks. Because of the large quantity of goods carried for settlers on the route of Mr J. H. Baird’s Christchurch-Doyleston-Leeston-Southbridge rural delivery, the service will remain a daily one. Three services, which are primarily passenger services, will probably be reduced to four days a week, because of the reduction in the quantity of petrol allowed the operators. It is not yet known whether the contractors will be able to continue the present daily service by eliminating other running. The routes in this category are; Ashburton-Longbeach, ChristchurchGovernor’s Bay-Allandale-Teddington. Duvauchelle-Pigeon Bay-Little Akaloa. Okain's Bay-Le Bon’s Bay-Akaroa. The Hawarden-Hurunui mail service, which is combined with the conveyance of school children, will operate three times a week during the school holidays. In term time, the bus will run on Mondays to Fridays, inclusive, but not on Saturdays.
