GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S VISIT NATIONAL MILITARY RESERVE REVIEWED Visits of inspection to coastal defences in the Christchurch area were made yesterday by the GovernorGeneral, Sir Cyril Newall. His Excellency, accompanied by Captain H. G. Helmore, A.D.C., first visited a coastal battery and was received by the Officer Commanding the Southern Military District (Brigadier O. H. Mead), the Fortress Commander (Lieu-tenant-Colonel the Hon. E. H. Northcroft), and the battery commander (Captain E. V. Smith). All tbe quarters were inspected, and a practice was watched at the gun emplacements. Visits were also made to the searchlight installations and to the fortress dental department. Later, His Excellency made an inspection of another battery and lunched in the officers’ mess. A visit was also made to the camp of the 3rd Battalion, National Military Reserve.
