OBITUARY
—♦ — MR JAMES HIGGS
Mr James Higgs, who died recently, could justly have claimed an unbroken connexion with one of the oldest butchery businesses in Canterbury. A son of Mr James Higgs, who arrived from Cornwall at Lyttelton in the early sixties, Mr Higgs was born at the port and educated at the local school. He learned his trade at his father’s shop in Lyttelton, and in 1887 he started business on his own in Waltham road, the business being known as James Higgs and Son’s Jubilee Butchery. He afterwards moved to Linwood, his first shop there being at the corner of Cashel street and Stanmore road, where his brother joined him as partner. He later acquired the Worcester street shop, where, assisted by his two sons as partners, he carried on one of the best known businesses in Linwood. Well known and popular at Addington, Mr Higgs’s geniality and reliability in business gained him many friends. He is survived by his widow, Mrs S. A. Higgs, and his two sons, Aubrey and Lance.
