SHOOTING SEASON FOR 1942
ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY’S RECOMMENDATIONS
An open season of at least 16 days for duck in the 1942 season is recommended by the game committee of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. The recommendation was that the season be from May 2 to May 17, With a limit bag of 10 birds a gun a day of all species (Paradise duck excepted). , Other recommendations included one for an open season for black swan of six weeks from May 2 to June 14, or alternatively a 16-day season from May 2 to May 17, and four organised swan drives in the first fortnight in June, and/or authority to destroy black swan eggs during the breeding season of 1942. No bag limit was recommended for black swans, ror Canadian geese, a season from May 2 to May 17 with no bag limit was recommended; and for pukeko the same season, with a limit of five birds a gun a day. For cock pheasants, a three birds a day limit for a' month’s season was recommended; the quota for Californian quail was to be a bag of 10 a day for a six weeks’ season, and for chukor a bag of five a day for six weeks. Changes made to these recommendations by the council last night included a suggestion that swan drives be allowed tit any time during Juno, mid another that, as a gesture, a bag limit of 10 birds a day be imposed on Canadian geese. . A recommendation carried was of the shooting licence of 255. the sum of 5s be paid into a separate vermin account, under the control of the council of the South Island Acclimatisation Societies.
