NATIONAL SAVINGS
230,000 ACCOUNTS OPENED In an interview on Thursday, Mr T. N. Smahwood, chairman of the New Zealand National Savings Committee, referred to the campaign for 250,000 national savings accounts launched on June 9 last, and stated that it was his proud privilege to announce that this goal had been reached—2so,l6l accounts had been opened, Mr Smallwood said that to know that 250,000 people were prepared • to' back the fighting forces with their savings gave cause for confidence, but he added that although the figure was large, it was felt that there were still many persons who could, if they wished, open an account. Steady progress was being made in the war savings campaign, said Mr Smallwood, and already the co-opera-tion of local committees, of which about 100 have been formed, was being reflected in rising receipts. For this financial year, between April 1 and October 31 last, receipts from national savings bonds and deposits in accounts amounted to £1,981,536, making a total since the campaign started in October, 1910, of £3,302,992,
