CONSCRIPTION IN AUSTRALIA
1 , APPEAL BY PRIME MINISTER (Received November 22, 12.30 a.m.) (U.P.A.) CANBERRA, November 20. An urgent plea to the people of Australia to refrain from controversy on conscription was made by the Prime Minister (Mr Curtin), , who said that such a controversy would not add a single man*to the fighting forces. Instead it would be appreciated by the enemy. Mr Curtin was replying to questions in the House of Representatives when he said that no issue could be so ill-timed or unwise, and in the present situation detrimental to the unity of Australia.
