FIVE FROSTS IN OCTOBER
OBSERVATORY WEATHER REPORT i October was a month of cloudy skies, says the monthly report of the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory. The rainfall was slightly below the normal of 1.876 inches and was evenly distributed over the month. The mean temperature of 51.58 degrees Fahrenheit was below tbe avevage of 53.12 degrees, and is' the lowest since 1937. There were five frosts recorded, compared with eight last year. Barometer (inches) Mean for month. 29.736; highest reading (on October 6), 30.325: lowest reading (on Oc - tober 22). 29.081.
Temperatures in Shade (degrees Fahrenheit).—Mean for month. 51.58; highest reading (on October 21). 70.2; lowest reading (on October 4), 34.2. Temperature Exposed (degrees Fahrenheit)— Mean minimum on grass, 38.65; lowest reading (on October 27), 28.3.
Moisture—Daily amount of cloud (0-10), 7.1; total rainfall, 1.06 in; number of rainy days, 13; heaviest fall (on October 3). 0.23 in.
Earth Temperatures (degrees Fahrenheit) —At a depth of one foot, 53.80; at a depth of three feet, 52.43; at a depth of five feet, 50.10.
