FAILURE TO ENROL
AUCKLAND MAN FINED
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 22; When seen by Detective Blakey on August 18, defendant said he had not enrolled and did not intend to enrol, said Detective-Sergeant Nalder, when prosecuting Richard Lee. a single man, aged 32, before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M. Lee was charged with failing to enrol in the General Reserve.
The defendant said he objected on conscientious grounds to enrolling, Detective Nalder continued, arid he told the detective he would. sooner serve in Auckland prison than in the Forces. The defendant was born in England, but came to New Zealand from Australia in. 1939. He immediately registered under the Social Security Act and obtained a levy book, but he had not paid any of the quarterly levies. He had no assets and had been unable to obtain a job through not registering. People must obey the laws, especially in war time, the Magistrate said in giving a warning that fines would have to be increased. The defendant was fined £2O.
