FISHPLATES ON LINE

ACTION OF ESCAPEES FROM BORSTAL

(P.R.) WELLINGTON, August 5. The placing of fishplates on the main railway line between Balclutha and Kakapuaka was attributed by the Minister lor Railways (the Hon. R. Semple) in a statement to-day to two escapees from a Borstal institution in an effort to check possible pursuit by velocipede. The Minister said that the lads, who were travelling south, had put two or three fishplates on the rail. The obstacles were- removed, and the youths were taken into custody. The line was patrolled further to ensure that no further obstacles had been placed on the track.

"I make this statement,” said the Minister, "in order to assure the public that there is no ground for thinking that it was an ordinary act of sabotage, carried out by some person resident in the locality, with a view to derailing express trains."
