ACCOMMODATION AT COLLEGE

REDUCTION OF STUDENTS Professor E. R. Hudson, director of Canterbury Agricultural College, reported at yesterday’s meeting of the Board of Governors that on August 1 the college buildings had been thrown open for inspection by the representatives of various local bodies and organisations. Approximately 140 persons attended, and as a result of the gathering a small committee was set up to support the claims of the board for the expediting of the building programme. Professor Hudson also reported that accommodation of a reasonably satisfactory nature existed for only 55 students, most of whom were housed in the new short course dormitory. The report recommended that until the remaining ‘ accommodation was put in order, enrolments should be limited to this number. This would necessitate the discontinuation of short courses during the winter months. ' The report was discussed at length in committee, and it was decided not to adopt the two final paragraphs relating to the limiting of enrolments until the remaining accommodation was put in order, and to the discontinuation of short courses during the winter months. It was stated that before the war 80 students were in attendance. In addition to a number of war students wishing to resume attendance after the war was the crop of potential students each year, also returned men desiring some degree of instruction before tak-

ing up farming. This made the accommodation problem exceedingly acute. professor Hudson stated that a number of inquiries were being received from potential students as to the terms of attendance, and in view of the deteriorating accommodation a line as to policy in the matter of future enrolments would be advisable. It wap agreed to limit students in the meantime to the number of 55, as set out in the report. ‘ i
