WOMAN MEMBER SWORN IN
(P.R.) WELLINGTON. July 29.' The newly-electec member for Waitemata, Mrs M M. Dreaver, made her first appearance in the House of Representatives to-day, when she was sworn in and took a seat near that formerly occupied by her predecessor. Captain W, J. Lyon. Mrs Dreaver, who was dressed in black, was informally greeted by several Ministers and other members. She was escorted b„ the two Government whips, Mr J. O’Brien (Westland) and Mr A. S. Richards (Roskill) as she walked forward to be sworn by Mr Speaker. WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION culvjerden Mrs M. Bethell (president) presided at the monthly meeting of the Culverden branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The president gave a resume of the business dealt with at the recent conference held in Wellington, which she attended as a member of the advisory board. A balaclava competition which was wor by Mrs W Grueber resulted in 42 balaclavas being handed in to be forwarded to the Red Cross Society. During the afternoon Mrs G’. Hartnell gave a demonstration of making a bed-cover from a well-washed fleece. Members of the branch decided to join the circle of knitters for the men of the mercantile marine. Mesdames D. Sterritt and G. Loffhagen were the hostesses for the social half-hour. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES PREBBLETON Mrs W. Kolkman presided at the monthly meeting of the Prebbleton Women’s Institute and Mrs Drayton gave a demonstration on making posies from felt A vote of sympathy was passed to several members. A new supply of cookery books was received, and Mrs Goodyer, a visitor from Reefton, was welcomed. Hostesses were Mrs M. Dickie and Mrs W. O. Downey. Results of the competitions were as follows:—Small bloom. Mrs G. Millar 1, Mrs P. Page 2, Mrs H. Prebble and Miss H. Carpenter 3 equal; large bloom, Mrs A Page 1, Mrs J. Easterbrook 2; vase of flowers, Mrs Easterbrook 1, Mrs H. Prebble 2, Mrs Millar and Mrs A. Page 3 equal; bran biscuits, tylrs F. Page 1, Mrs M. Dickie 2. Mrs A. Page 3; article knitted from used wool, Mrs Easterbrook 1, Miss H. Carpenter 2, Mrs A. Page 3. AKAROA Mrs G. M. Kearney, vice-president, presided at the committee meeting or the -Akaroa Women’s Institute. A letter of thanks for sympathy in their recent bereaveipent was received from Mr 0. A. Thelning and family, and a letter from Miss Agnes Stopps, who is now in Australia, was also received. Mrs C. Petterson, honorary treasurer, reported on the recent birthday party. ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Doris Martha, daughter of Mj and Mrs R. Russell, Oxford, to Walter, son of Mr and the late Mrs J. McDonald, St. Albans, Christchurch.
