CURRENT NOTES

Lady Sargood (Wellington) arrived in Christchurch from the north yesterday morning. Major and Mrs R. S. Hunter Blair (“The Lodge,” Hanmer Springs), are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mrs Mary Ann Hopkins, whose death has occurred at Greymouth, at the age of 80 years, was born at Woodend. Canterbury, and went to live at Greymouth as a child. She is survived by three sons and eight daughters. Mr and Mrs Wilfrid Beadel (Fendalton) are staying at “Ilfracombe.” Akaroa., Members of the Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade organised a successful , ball at Kaikoura. The grand march was led by Captain S. Allan and Mrs V. Wright. Music for dancing was played by the Royal Dance Band, and extras were played by Mrs W.-H. Harris, Messrs E. W. Harris, and G. Under the auspices of the Sumner Patriotic and Public Appeals Committee a series of entertainments have been arranged for the officers and men of Godley Head. At a recent party the programme was organised by members of Drayton, Jones, Ltd,, and Robert Francis, Ltd., under the direction of Mr J. Swan and Miss Grayney. Mesdames E. T. Chitty, L. Retallick, and F. G. Vincent acted as hostesses. Members of the Sumner Girls’ Hockey Club met at the home of Mr H. C. Ford to consider forming a baseball team for play after the hockey season. Mr J. Graham and six members of the Redcliffs Club were welcomed. Mr C. Buckett, president of the Canterbury Baseball Association, was also present. It was decided that a club should be formed and that the uniform should be a blue blouse and grey shorts. Miss M. Smedley was elected secretary. Mr H. C. Ford undertook to make arrangements for using a room for physical training. The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully acknowledges the receipt of 16s from “A Monday Bridge Circle” for comforts for men on minesweepers. Mrs H. Prebble presided at the July meeting of the Prebbleton sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, when a number of gifts and a large parcel of old linen were received. It was reported ‘that several successful functions had been held recently, one of which had been in aid of the fund for trained nurses overseas. The president gave a short report on the annual meeting held in Christchurch.
