KAIKOURA COUNTY COUNCIL

GRANT FOB HOME GUARD REFUSED The Kaikoura County Council held its monthly meeting On Friday night, the chairman (Mr F. J. Monk) presiding At the request of the Medical Officer of Health (Dr, T. F. Telford), Inspector Ellett, of Blenheim, was appointed to carry out the duties in the East Coast riding as previously, before the boundaries were altered. It was reported that the installation of a transmitting radio set in Kaikoura was under consideration by the net Postmaster, Christchurch. The Marlborough Coast Rabbit Board wrote regarding the Bluff track, asking for authority to expend.up to £5 on urgent work when it was not possible to obtain the council’s permission first. It was resolved that the council could not accede to the request. The Commissioner of Transport advised that provision for weekly heavy traffic licences was being considered to meet special occasions. The council was agreeable to alteration of the heavy traffic licence year to expire on June 30 each year. The Officer Commanding the Marlborough Area of the Home Guard wrote asking the councillor a grant of £2OO a year to enable expenses, estimated at £240 a year, to be met, as the capitation grant was only £4O. It was resolved that the council regretted it could not accede to the request. One councillor observed that it was a taxpayer’s rather than a ratepayer’s job. The chairman gave notice to move that a general rate of Jd in the £ be struck, special rates to remain the same as last year.

ASHLEY RATES OF LESS THAN PENNY IN POUND The deputy-chairman (Cr. T. Pulley) presided over the monthly; meeting of the Ashley County Council. Others present were Crs. A, A. Mackintosh, J. Waller, E. M. Gibson, and R. E. Judson. The estimates for the current year were adopted, and it was agreed to levy the following rates;—-General rate, 7-16 d, hospital rate 7-16 d, Ashley bridge rate l-16d, and Okuku bridge rate l-32d, a total, rate of 31-32 d, just under Id in the £. The Hospital Board forwarded 9 statement of the council’s contribution for the current year, the amount .being £1195; an increase of £2OO on that of last year. It was agreed to contribute the sum of £ls towards the expenses of the Home Guard training camp. It was decided to reappoint Mr W. Hughes to . the position of stock ranger for the county, . , The council decided to invite tenders for the delivery of about 1500 cubic yards of screened metal for county roads and highways. It was also decided to consider additional labour to carry out river protective works before the season was too well advanced.. The treasurer reported that receipts since last meeting amounted to £65, accounts passed for payment totalled £556 19s sd, the credit balapce at the bank being £609 2s.
