PATRIOTIC FUNDS
CONFERENCE REJECTS TAXATION PLAN CP.A.) WELLINGTON, June 6. Consideration was given by the conference of patriotic bodies yesterday to a suggestion recently made by the Masterton District Committee that funds for patriotic purposes be raised by taxation rather than by voluntary methods. The proposal was rejected. It was conveyed to the conference that the opinion of the Government was against the suggestion. The view was generally agreed upon that the basic principle of patriotic effort was to supplement what was done by the Government, and that its essence was voluntary effort by the community itself. It was also agreed that if money were raised by taxation it would be unreasonable to expect that the Government would delegate spending to anyone else. An Otago proposal to alter the name of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild to the New Zealand Women’s Patriotic Guild was defeated, as the guild itself had added the words “New Zealand” to' its title. A motion expressing appreciation of the services of Mr G. A. Hayden as secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board was carried with acclamation.
